Planning Insights:
12 months at planning
The existing building was in a state of dereliction so the neighbours were happy for it to be renovated. They rebuilt the shell in the same shape as the original historic stables, including the winch to the hayloft. Using local slate from Trevillett Quarry in North Cornwall and Delabole slate from a local house, they used materials in keeping with the industrial vernacular. They won the Cornish Buildings Group Award 2024 for Best New Build in Cornwall, a fantastic stamp of approval.
Morlanow is built to the same exterior appearance as the heritage stables -informed by a historical photo at Kresen Kernow. The crumbling walls and asbestos roof required demolition.
The house backs right onto the road and lacks privacy. An in-stepped front door creates a transitional threshold. The local park and beach are their garden.
Nina found that some people didn't take her seriously as the project manager and designer, however this was a good way to vet people they wanted to work with and most tradespeople were great.
